If you are comparing dental CAD outsourcing options as a U.S. lab, the quotes look similar and the websites look similar. The variable that actually separates them is not price per unit — it is how long a question takes to answer, and how much a case costs you when something is unclear.

Compare cost on the same basis

Use actual supplier quotes and your own internal cost method. Include applicable salary, software, hardware, training and remaining review work consistently. No market-wide price range or automatic saving is assumed in this comparison.

But that arithmetic assumes the case goes through cleanly the first time. The moment a case needs one clarification, the comparison changes shape — and removable cases need clarification more often than crowns do, because there is more to specify.

What a time zone is worth

Consider a hypothetical coordination example: a prescription needs clarification. The scenarios below illustrate working-hour overlap; they are not response-time or delivery commitments from any supplier.

  • Offshore, twelve time zones away. The question is written while you sleep. You answer in your morning; they are asleep. The design resumes their next day and lands on your desk the day after. One ambiguity, roughly two days.
  • Nearshore, in your business day. The question arrives while the case is open. You answer in minutes. The design continues the same afternoon.

Neither route is more skilled in this example. The difference is entirely structural, and it repeats on every case with a decision in it.

Where offshore genuinely wins

It is worth being straight about this. Offshore design is a good fit for high-volume, low-ambiguity work: single crowns, standard copings, repeatable anatomy, cases where the prescription is complete and nobody needs to ask anything. Overnight becomes an advantage — you send at close of business and it is waiting in the morning.

If your outsourced volume is mostly single units, the time zone argument is weak and you should optimize for price and consistency.

Where nearshore wins

The picture inverts on work that carries judgment: removable frameworks, combination cases, anything with a preference to confirm or a compromise to discuss. An RPD has a path of insertion to agree on, undercuts to select, relief to specify, connector geometry to approve. Each of those is a potential round trip.

That is why we argue for keeping removable design close: not because designers in Asia cannot do it, but because RPD design is a conversation, and conversations are expensive when each turn costs a night.

The second half: physical goods

If you outsource only files, geography stops mattering once the design is done. If you ever want the metal, it starts mattering a lot.

Physical delivery requires a separate plan for manufacturing release, carrier, destination, documentation and import responsibilities. Compare actual service quotes and applicable charges for each route; location or a trade agreement alone does not establish the transit time, cost or eligibility of a shipment. Questions worth asking either kind of partner

  • When my designer has a question at 2 p.m. Eastern, when is it answered?
  • Do my house preferences persist between cases, or are they re-explained every time?
  • Who reviews whether the case can support the design being requested — before it is designed?
  • Is the returned mesh checked for printability, or only for looking correct on screen?
  • If I later want the physical framework, can the same partner produce it, and how does it ship?

The answers matter more than the rate card.
